Teletalk launches 4G in Dhaka

The state-run mobile operator Teletalk commercially launched the fastest fourth generation (4G) mobile data service in major parts of Dhaka last evening.

The 4G network will cover the entire Dhaka city by December and will move to Chattogram within the next couple of weeks, Teletalk Managing Director Shahab Uddin told The Daily Star today.

The mobile operator had created much hype when they launched 3G in 2012, a year ahead of their other competitors.

“Every day we are covering more than 30 sites with fast 4G services and by December 25 the capital will be covered,” said Shahab Uddin.

Initially Teletalk’s 4G network will be available in Gulshan, Niketan, Baridhara, Banani, Ramna, Mothijheel, Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi, Shyamoli and Farmgate and the areas under Dhaka University and BUET in the city.

Teletalk officials said they are offering customers the best speed -- 15 Mbps for upload and 40 Mbps for download.

Existing 3G users can send a text to ‘111’ writing ‘4G’ and that will switch their service.

“We will try our level best to satisfy our customers with our highest level of speed and best coverage and that will give us a lead in the market share,” Shahab Uddin said.

Teletalk has taken up a Tk 987 crore-project with its own fund, under which 550 towers have already been established mostly in big cities and the process is going on to set up 550 new ones in district headquarters for 4G network, officials said.

Currently, the smallest operator in the country, Teletalk has 34.93 lakh active connections which is about two percent of the market share and only few of them are regularly active.

In February, all four mobile operators in the country got their 4G licences.
