Myanmar Post and Telecommunications (MPT) has expanded coverage of its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network to more areas of Yangon and Mandalay, as well as providing coverage in Shan state for the first time, launching the service in Taunggyi city. In Yangon, MPT rolled out coverage to Ahlone, Bahan, Dagon, Kamayut, Kyi Myin Dine and Yankin – expanding its current footprint of nine areas – whilst in Mandalay the operator launched in Aung Myay Tha Zan, its second township after Chan Aye, Thar Zan. To coincide with the expansion works the telco, which is managed in partnership with KDDI/Sumitomo joint venture KDDI Summit Global Myanmar (KSGM) through via a revenue sharing arrangement, is offering new customers free installation.
Commenting on the launch, CCO of MPT-KSGM operations Reizo Umeda was quoted as saying: ‘The latest update to include more townships in Yangon, Mandalay and Taunggyi underlines our commitment to provide enhanced connectivity to even more home users and businesses, at even more affordable rates. We also have plans to expand our service area to other cities and townships across Myanmar in coming 2019.’ As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, MPT updated its fibre plans in October this year, boosting download speeds at no extra cost to customers. Its budget cheapest tariff at MMK39,000 (USD25.2), for example, was upgraded to 10Mbps from 2Mbps, whilst its premium MMK109,000 plan was increased from 10Mbps to 50Mbps.
