Sri Lanka computer, digital literacy on the rise

Digital and computer literacy in Sri Lanka has grown from a year earlier with greater ownership of personal computers and mobile devices, the state statistics office said.

The Census and Statistics Department said that 28.6 percent of Sri Lankans had computer literacy in 2017, up from 27.6 percent a year earlier, while digital literacy grew to 40.1 percent from 33.8 percent.

"Digital literacy is higher than computer literacy for all disaggregated levels, showing the drift from personal computers to smartphones/tablets," it said.

It said that 22.98 percent of households had computers in 2017, up from 21.6 percent a year earlier.

Around 38.2 percent of urban households had a computer last year, compared to 20.6 percent in rural areas and 4.5 percent in estate sector.

Mobile phone penetration was 131.5 percent in 2017, up from 123.7 percent a year earlier. (Colombo/Nov30/2018)
