Canadian triple-play cableco Cogeco Connexion has announced the availability of gigabit internet services over HFC DOCSIS 3.1 technology for residents and businesses in a number of new locations in Quebec province. Cogeco’s new 1Gbps and 360Mbps (download) packages are now being offered with optimised in-premises Wi-Fi equipment in Quebecois markets including Trois-Rivieres, Drummondville, Saint-Hyacinthe, Rimouski and Saint-Adele, available in ‘targeted areas’ of these communities.
Michel Blais, Vice President of Engineering and Operations at Cogeco Connexion, said: ‘As we continue to leverage our network, which runs from Windsor, Ontario to Gaspe, Quebec, we expect that by August 2019 a majority of Cogeco Connexion’s footprint will be 1 Gig ready.’ Company president Ken Smithard added: ‘More than ever, our customers are asking for increased internet capabilities to support their gaming, streaming and browsing needs or as a business enabler increasing their business’ reach and productivity.’
TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database says that Cogeco introduced a 1Gbps (symmetrical) direct fibre option in H1 2017, but this alternative service remained limited to areas of Burlington and Oakville (Ontario) only as the operator subsequently shifted its focus to upgrading its DOCSIS 3.0 cable network to 3.1 standard instead.
