Unitymedia launches gigabit broadband in Frankfurt

German cableco Unitymedia has confirmed that it switched on its new gigabit broadband service in Frankfurt. The service leverages DOCSIS 3.1 technology and is available to around 380,000 households from launch, or 90% of the Frankfurt population. TeleGeography notes that Frankfurt is the second German city to receive Unitymedia’s gigabit-capable service, following Bochum in North Rhine-Westphalia, where the network went live in May this year. A 1Gbps/50Mbps (down/upload) subscription is priced at EUR99.99 (USD113.8) per month.

Winni Rapp, CEO of Unitymedia, commented: ‘Germany is taking another step towards gigabit society. With these ‘Gigabit Cities’, we are demonstrating that it is possible to offer super-fast internet almost everywhere – in a relatively short time, with … the new transmission standard DOCSIS 3.1. After starting in Bochum with 170,000 households, we can reach more than twice as many customers in Frankfurt with gigabit access.’
