BT Openreach pushing ahead with ultrafast broadband

BT has published its second-quarter financials, the last before the October 1 spinoff of its Openreach division.

The UK telco reported it had passed almost 2 million ultrafast premises to date with a further 13,000 being passed every week.

Through its subsidiary EE it has also demonstrated 5G capability from a live site in London’s Canary Wharf.

The company reported pre-tax profits of £1,340 million.

Commenting on the results outgoing chief executive, Gavin Patterson, said
“We continued to generate positive momentum in the second quarter resulting in encouraging results for the half year. We are successfully delivering against the core pillars of our strategy with improved customer experience metrics, accelerating ultrafast deployment and positive progress towards transforming our operating model.”

On Wednesday, BT gave details of a long-term content supply agreement with Sky. It said audiences to the UEFA Champions League group stages saw a 46% increase in viewing figures compared to the same period last year. The Premier League average audience is up 9% year on year with a new record for digital platform only viewing. However, there were no new subscriber numbers for BT TV.
