AT&T to start delivering high-speed internet to rural parts of Madison County

A&T has began its roll out of more fixed wireless internet centers in Madison County.

The announcement took place in the southwest part of the county near Denmark. State Rep. Johnny Shaw (D-District 80) and the Jackson Chamber of Commerce were in attendance.

"This is long-awaited technology that will serve Madison and West Tennessee," Shaw said. "AT&T has been talking about this technology for a long time. We're on our way to covering our rural areas that haven't been able to enjoy this technology."

AT&T's fixed wireless is high-speed internet service that uses the cell tower to create internet networks. The cell towers connect to a box provided by AT&T that remains outside the customer's house positioned like a satellite TV dish.

The internet speeds are at least 10 megabytes per second for download, and 1 megabyte per second for upload. The average U.S. internet speed is 18.75 megabytes for downloading.

"I think by being able to access wireless high speed internet to underserved and rural areas, it will help with economic development," Jackson Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice-President Mandy White said. "It will allow people to work from home, telecommute and help students study from home — which helps people better prepare for jobs and be more successful.
