The public telecom company Ethio Telecom signed a servicing agreement with the Ethiopian Electrical Utilities (EEU) to solve the quality problems caused by untimely disruptions of its network. Thanks to this agreement, EEU will provide Ethio Telecom, a guaranteed volume of energy the telecom company needs to power part of its sites and guarantee ongoing operation of its network.
The other sites will still be powered with diesel generators and solar panels. Apart from solving the problem of untimely disruption, the energy provided by EEU will also allow Ethio Telecom to avoid its full dependence on diesel-powered generators which requires lots of money in foreign currency to buy that diesel. In 2017, the news website Addis Fortune revealed that Ethio Telecom lost ETB2.1 billion ($75,293,864) due to network disruptions.
Let’s remind that this cooperation between Ethio Telecom and EEU falls within the framework of a program initiated by the new CEO of Ethio Telecom, Frehiwot Tamiru, to improve network quality.
