Next wave of eSIM to be a reality in Sri Lanka

Giesecke & Devrient (G+D) Mobile Security, the market leader in embedded SIM (eSIM) technology and experts on the eSIM ecosystem announced the expansion of G+D’s presence in Sri Lanka during the next few years, with plans to enter into strategic partnerships with leading banks and telecommunication service providers.

In April 2018, G+D Mobile Security partnered with Sri Lanka’s premier connectivity provider Dialog Axiata to launch the commercial deployment of eSIM technology, along with the launch of the eSIM-compatible Huawei Watch 2 smartwatch in Sri Lanka. The pre-installed eSIM in wearables gives customers in Sri Lanka the ability to have a connection for their devices independent of a smartphone, eliminating the need for pairing devices and to be within a range of distance for connectivity.

Commenting about their presence in Sri Lanka, Deval Sheth — Managing Director of G+D India said, “We have already worked with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and Dialog Axiata and we are in talks with a number of leading private banks and telco providers on how to further promote innovation through eSIM technology in Sri Lanka. For G+D, we see this market as an exciting place with a huge potential. With digital payments and Internet of Things (IoT) gradually rising in the country, we want to expand our presence here and be an important partner of Sri Lanka’s journey towards digital transformation. With more customers joining G+D in Sri Lanka, I see nothing but expansion in this market with a strong workforce.”

eSIM is a potential technology which can usher in a technological revolution and has great potential to transform the society. It has eliminated the need for a physical SIM, empowering the subscriber to remotely sign up for services by activating the profile over the internet. This will enable many technologically advanced applications in the areas of smart devices, IoT, connected cars, home appliances and fleet management. With the need for flexible, global connectivity growing, eSIM comes in at a time where Sri Lankan businesses must remain agile to succeed in both a shifting marketplace and an increasingly connected society.

eSIM Management by G+D Mobile Security allows users to remotely download SIM profiles over-the-air. This eases everything, from the SIM provisioning process to the selection of the mobile operator. It simplifies changing SIM profiles during the lifetime of the device and transferring an existing profile to a new device. This increased flexibility enhances the control of connectivity, reduces logistics costs, and eases processes in a growing number of use cases.

G+D’s full-service solution allows for both a flexible and dynamic user journey. It includes SIM, device software, platform, service, management and partners and lets leveraging existing business infrastructure and processes. An active driver for dynamic connectivity management is enabled by eSIM management solutions.

G+D have installed more than 10 million commercial eSIMs across the globe that offer compatibility with many different commercial systems. They also offer a fully-digital process, faster connectivity of their devices and allows consumer devices the enablement and the provisioning of a fully-digital journey for the mobile subscriber. The product can be easily adapted to the increasing number of subscriptions to be managed and offers great performance and has been commercially proven to be reliable.

Many new connected devices, like the recently launched iPhone XS and XS Max as well as some IoT devices, don’t have a slot for a pluggable SIM but are instead capable of connecting to cellular networks via embedded SIM technology. G+D Mobile Security has been a leading provider of eSIM management technology to activate the carrier-unique credentials securely over-the-air on these devices and supports a large number of network operators worldwide in their eSIM projects.
