MNP goes live in Bolivia

Bolivia has activated mobile number portability (MNP). In a statement, the country’s communications watchdog ATT said over 11 million lines will benefit from the new service, which aims to promote fairer competition among mobile service providers, resulting in better rates, better quality and more promotions.

To apply for MPN, the number needs to have been in service for at least 60 days and, once a port is effected, users need to wait at least 30 days before requesting a change to another operator. In addition, there must be no outstanding debts and any outstanding credit won’t be transferred to the new operator. Users may change operators up to twice a year without incurring any expenses apart from the cost of the new SIM card.

Bolivia ended the first quarter of 2018 with 11.32 million active mobile lines, up by around 200,000 year on year, according to ATT. The departments of La Paz (29%), Santa Cruz (28%) and Cochabamba (18%) accounted for over 75 percent of the connections, followed by Oruro (6%) and Tarija, Potosi and Chuquisaca with 5 percent each.
