The event, which took place from September 10 to 13 in Durban, South Africa, aims at bringing together governments, corporates and tech SMEs working to accelerate ICT innovation for social and economic development.

The forum addressed several topics including 5G, new regulatory approaches, digital financial services, satellite connectivity, smart cities, and universal connectivity.

The Sultanate’s participation included a paper presentation on digital identity and its role in the sustainable development goals in general.

Yahya bin Salim Al Azri, Director of the National Digital Certification Centre at ITA, reviewed the Sultanate’s experience in establishing an integrated system of national digital identity and the challenges that faced the implementation of the project.

He addressed the Sultanate’s success in linking government electronic services to the national digital certification system.

Al Azri also talked about the centre’s success in integrating with service providers such as the Royal Oman Police, OmanTel, and Ooredoo, in addition to talking about the digital identity role in providing secured transactions, reducing misuse and fraud, and ensuring personal data confidentiality.
