Telenor, Telia enable 1Gbps speeds over LTE-A network

Danish mobile operators Telia and Telenor have upgraded their joint LTE-A network to support maximum speeds of 1Gbps. In separate press releases, the duo disclosed that the new technology will form the basis for the rollout of 5G services. The two operators enabled the Gigabit speeds in a single mast in central Copenhagen, though the upgrade will be rolled out to other cities/towns going forward. Telenor and Telia said that only a few handsets, including the Samsung S9 and the Samsung S9+, currently support the 1Gbps speeds.

TeleGeography notes that in February 2012 Telenor and Telia established a common infrastructure company – TT-Netvaerket – to operate the shared 2G/3G/4G mobile networks. The partnership only covers the RAN (i.e. the antennas, towers and transmission equipment) and does not involve the two companies’ core networks, enabling the firms to continue to offer different services to mobile users. The duo outsourced the operation of the joint infrastructure to Nokia in August 2017.
