Telcos start e-registration of SIM in Bangladesh

Mobile operators have started electronic registration of SIM, without requiring any paper works for subscribers for purchasing their mobile connections.

Banglalink and Grameenphone introduced the e-registration of SIM in last two days aiming to simplify the registration process.

As a consequence of this initiative, the SIM registration process will no longer require any paper works, which will result in an overall simplification of the entire procedure, said Banglalink, which introduced the service on Monday.

Furthermore, the paperless registration process will enhance the security of subscribers’ personal information, it said.

Banglalink CEO Erik Aas said, ‘Banglalink welcomes the Government’s initiative to introduce electronic and paperless SIM registration process. This initiative will play a remarkable role in simplifying the registration process of mobile subscribers along with strengthening the security of their personal information.’

Grameenphone launched the service on Tuesday at a programme at GP Lounge, Gulshan.
E-registration removes the need to fill up any paper-based subscriber application form (SAF) and introduces a paperless SIM registration process, said GP in a press release.

Under the new process a customer needs only to share his or her name, ID number, date of birth, present address and fingerprint with the retailer when purchasing a new SIM.

The process is expected to further strengthen the security of customers’ personal information, it said.
GP deputy CEO and CMO Yasir Azman stated, ‘This system will not only make the lives of the customers easier through a systematic process but will also be beneficial for the telecom ecosystem moving towards further digitization. And not to mention, it will also contribute to the environmental preservation in the long run.’

GP said that initially, the e-registration process would only be applicable for new SIM sales only. Gradually the process will also be applicable for ownership transfer (consumer, corporate), dual claims, death case settlements, MNP, and address updates, etc. The whole process is free of cost for the customer.

However, the price of a new connection or any relevant service charges will be applicable, it said. In case of biometric information (date of birth/fingerprint) mismatch against NID/Smart card, the new SIM will not be activated and registered.
