Telefonica drives LTE expansion with 3,000 additional base stations

Telefonica Deutschland, Germany’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, says it installed or upgraded more than 3,000 additional LTE base stations in the first half of the year. The company has condensed its network with additional LTE elements in almost all cities in Germany, improving the network performance in densely populated areas. In rural parts of the country, meanwhile, Telefonica says it has connected around 50,000 people per week in all 16 German states to 4G. In addition, the firm has expanded LTE along important transport infrastructures such as motorways and railway lines. In general, customers can access download speeds of 225Mbps and upload speeds of up to 75Mbps, with the average download rates of all customers with ‘LTE Max’ tariffs increased from 19Mbps to 27Mbps.

‘Whether in major German cities or in the countryside – we are currently driving the LTE expansion like no other company, so that our customers benefit from an improved and faster O2 network,’ commented Cayetano Carbajo Martin, Member of the Board of Directors and CTO of Telefonica Deutschland, adding: ‘We will continue to push forward in the future and take extensive measures to expand the network in the interest of our customers.’
