Mytel reaches 70% nationwide coverage

The fourth telecommunications operator Mytel has reached 70 percent coverage of the Myanmar population, according to U Zaw Min Oo, the company’s chief external relations officer.

U Zaw Min Oo said almost all townships in Yangon Region have been covered by the company, which uses the so-called VoLTE technology for data and clear voice.

“Almost all townships in Yangon Region have been covered by our network. Thousands of BTS stations were needed for Yangon’s full coverage,” he said.

Base transceiver stations (BTS) are comprised of an antenna and radio equipment necessary to communicate with a GSM mobile station.

“At present, due to transmission issues, there may be minor interruptions in some locations. We ask those users to be patient,” U Zaw Min Oo said.

Three million SIM cards have been distributed in the market and there are 100,000 Mytel users.

Mytel 4G SIM cards and top-up cards are available at 50 Mytel shops and 50,000 distribution retailers across the country.

“We have distributed three million SIM cards to the shops and there are 100,000 Mytel users,” U Zaw Min Oo said.

A total of 30,000 kilometres of fiber optic cable was laid by Mytel in a one-year period, accounting for 50pc of fiber optic cable installation.
