Orange agrees on mobile licence amendments

Orange Cameroon and the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications have agreed a number of amendments to the cellco’s mobile operating licence, which was most recently renewed in March 2015.

APA reports that the changes include the introduction of service neutrality for the use of mobile frequencies and set an annual spectrum fee of 1% of the firm’s turnover, excluding taxes. The amendments permit the French-owned operator to deploy fibre-optic networks to improve the quality of its services, although Orange remains barred from offering retail fixed broadband access. Under the concession amendments, the cellco is also required to roll out 4G networks to all major regional cities, as well as universities, major economic activity areas and locations with at least 10,000 residents.
