Google Fiber expands in San Antonio

Google Fiber continues to expand in San Antonio, Texas. The company this week announced that it would be expanding availability of its ultra-fast broadband service to the far West Side area near Westover Hills. Users can sign up for the service expansion via the company's website, and says additional neighborhoods will be added to the sign up list this summer.

"While we’ve been getting them installed and getting their service running for them we’ve continued to construct fiber in additional neighborhoods in the vicinity," the company tells local news outlets. "At this point of time we’re ready to start opening up sign-ups for those new neighborhoods that we have been building over the last few months there.”

The company's launch was delayed in San Antonio after many locals complained that Google was building large network buildings in public parks without adequtely informing locals about the construction. The company was ultimately forced to redesign much of its expansion efforts in the city to accommodate these concerns.

Users in the city will have the option of only gigabit broadband for $55 per month (an effort to undercut AT&T fiber's presence in the city). Unlike earlier markets, Google Fiber won't be selling a 100 Mbps option. Neither will they be selling traditional TV service in the city, after finding public interest in traditional TV lacking and the costs of providing the service unsustainable in the wake of relentless broadcaster rate hikes.
