Pay-TV subscribers at record-high in Spain

Pay-TV penetration is breaking all records in Spain. In the third quarter of 2017, subscriber numbers grew by 6.6 per cent year-on-year to over 6.4 million, the highest ever, according to CNMC.

Telefónica’s Movistar Plus leads the market both in terms of subscribers and revenues. The company had 3.7 billion subscribers as of the end of September and made €401 million in revenues out of the total pay-TV market of €486 million in the third quarter.

Vodafone was second with 1.3 billion subscribers and revenues of €51.59 million; Orange ranked third with 585,234 subscribers and a turnover of €16.9 million.

By delivery, IPTV is the leader with 3.8 million subscribers, up 464,000 versus the same period last year. Satellite is losing subscribers, down 141,000 year on year up to 811,144.

OTT platforms like Netflix, HBO and beIN Connect grew by 36.3 per cent to 309,855 subscribers.
