Virgin Media Ireland planning network expansion

Virgin Media Ireland is reportedly mulling an expansion of its broadband infrastructure that could boost the number of premises its covers to more than a million over the next three years.

According to the Irish Independent, with the operator’s network currently available predominantly in cities, executives at Virgin Media were cited as saying that they are considering extending coverage into regional towns. Meanwhile, the cableco has also suggested that it could double the maximum speeds available on its network to around 1Gbps within the next four years, with a view to remaining competitive with fibre networks being deployed by rival ISPs. Virgin Media has, however, said it does not intend to cooperate with rival broadband providers by renting out access to its infrastructure, nor does it plan to offer retail services using the networks of other operators.
