Internet is safer for children or not, it is no doubt a debatable topic. Because we can’t guarantee about the content which children access when they are setting alone and use internet. UNICEF Suggests to Make Digital World Safer for Children in Pakistan.
That’s why United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) in the latest version of their annual flagship global report The State of the World’s Children (SOWC) 2017, focused on the digital technology sector and telecom industries that must make expanding access to the internet and making priority to protect children online.
The report was being discussed in a panel organised by UNICEF in Islamabad. According to the report, that there are too little precautionary measure to protect children from the perils of the digital world and too little done to increase their access to safe online content while one in three internet users worldwide is a child. However, 346 million youth around the world are not online.
Melanie Galvin, chief of Nutrition for Unicef in Pakistan said:
Where we want to turn this digital gap into a digital bridge, we also want to ensure that online presence for children and youth is safe by all means. Unicef views it as an inequity that millions of children and youth in Pakistan and around the world are not connected to the internet which reduces their ability to participate in an increasingly digital economy. “In a country like Pakistan, progress for every child is much more dependent on safe, inclusive and widely accessible online opportunities. To understand that the digital is not a need but an essential part of growing up in this world is the only way forward.
The report makes a call to governments, the digital technology sector and telecom industries should take steps by creating policies, practices and products that can help and protect children from harm when they use internet. The report by UNICEF represents the first comprehensive look that how digital technology is affecting children, identifying dangers as well as opportunities.
