Hawaiian Telcom expands broadband in Hawaii

Hawaiian Telcom said it has expanded its fiber broadband to 5,000 rural areas in Hawaii, an effort partially funded by the federal Connect America Fund.

In 2015, Hawaiian Telcom was awarded approximately $26 million in CAF Phase II support to continue expanding high-speed broadband internet service in Hawaii’s rural areas, mostly on the Neighbor Islands, through 2020.

“Hawaiian Telcom is committed to expanding broadband access so more of our residents can experience its extensive benefits,” Scott Barber, Hawaiian Telcom president and CEO, said. “We’re proud to be the only local provider actively expanding broadband within high-cost rural areas and of our ability to deploy speeds more than 100 times higher than the federal requirement.”

Since launching its fiber-to-the-premise technology in June 2015, Hawaiian Telcom said it has expanded 1 gig availability by more than 50 percent to more than 140,000 residences and businesses on Oahu, Kauai, Maui and the Big Island.

Hawaiian Telcom said broadband is now available in parts of Eden Roc, Fern Acres, Fern Forest, Glenwood, Hawaiian Acres, Hakalau, Kaiwiki, Kalapana, Kalopa Mauka, Kapoho, Kurtistown, Leilani Estates, Milolii, Nanawale Estates, Ninole, Ocean View Estates, Orchidland, Ouli, Paauilo Mauka and Waikii Ranch on Hawaii Island, Huelo on Maui, and Kaluakoi on Molokai.
