Chorus wants shared 5G network for NZ

New Zealand’s wholesale network operator Chorus says the country should construct a single 5G mobile system which can be shared by all retail service providers. The New Zealand government provided funding for the country’s nationwide fibre infrastructure, the Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB) network, which has been deployed by Chorus and several other firms. End-user services are then sold by third-party ISPs.

The CEO of Chorus, Kate McKenzie, told BusinessDesk: ‘… when you get into the 5G world, there’s a pretty strong argument that we should be thinking about using the same model we’ve used for the fibre infrastructure’. She said that it would not be sustainable for the country’s three mobile network operators (MNOs) Spark, Vodafone and 2degrees to roll out separate 5G networks due to the amount of investment needed. She added that New Zealand risked being left behind if 5G rollouts are left to market forces, and is calling on the government to begin formulating plans now for a shared deployment.
