Jamii Telecommunications has launched its Faiba 4G mobile network in Nairobi, a move expected to fuel a data price war with competition Safaricom, Telkom Kenya, Airtel and Equitel.
Faiba Mobile will be JTL’s next frontier after aggressively pursuing broadband connectivity in the corporate, home and retail market segments in Kenya.
Jamii Telecoms will offer mobile phone services with the prefix 0747 after the company invested Sh5.1 billion in its network infrastructure and successfully launched commercial trials.
Getting its footing in an already crowded race, JTL will have to fend off increased competition in the data market already hogged by telecom giant Safaricom which is growing its mobile data and the home internet market with Safaricom Home.
Faiba 4G, which is expected to kill the firm’s own home fibre internet Faiba Home will be running on a 700MHz spectrum and will offer customer free on-net calls as long as they have a valid data bundle. Customers can get free SIM cards or buy Mi-Fi at PhoneXpress.
The expectation is that there will be an additional mobile money platform in Kenya since Back in July, Jamii Telecoms also got trademarks for Faiba Money and Faiba Pay which may be added services in the coming months or years.
Faiba 4G has installed over 300 base stations across the country but is targeting to have 1000 base stations in thirty six months. The firm says its 4G network coverage is live in Nairobi, Mombasa,Nakuru, Eldoret, Kisumu and Thika and all its customers can enjoy up to 72Mbps speeds.
In the meantime, the firm would do better with a working website, active customer care on phone and via its social media pages and also have a working public and media relations team otherwise its success will just be the launch.
