AngoSat-1 set for space in December

AngoSat-1 will be launched on a Zenit rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Airbus Defence and Space has built the communications payload. The satellite will comprise C- and Ku-bands on 44 transponders, and will primarily be used to broadcast satellite television. Around 80% of its capacity will be available for lease, with the remaining 20% used by the state.

Investment in the satellite has amounted to US$320 million, financed by a consortium of banks led by Russia’s VTB, according to Jornal de Angola.

The satellite is result of a 2009 agreement between Angola and Russia, and once launched, will be operated by the Angosat company in Angola’s capital Luanda, where a mission control headquarters and associated infrastructure will be located.

In May 2017 Angola announced the development of communications and earth observation satellites, and the establishment of a national space agency.
