Parts of Yetman will receive an improved internet service with Telstra agreeing to set up a temporary hub in the town centre, Inverell Shire Councillor Kate Dight revealed at the October meeting of council on Wednesday.
The Telstra hub will provide 4G Plus access within a 300 to 400 metre radius of the old Telstra tower in the centre of Yetman.
The move follows an extended delay in upgrading the community tower, 15 kilometres away, which has left the township with just a 3G wireless service.
“It’s unbelievably slow,” Cr Dight said noting conversations about upgrading the tower have been ongoing with Telstra since early 2016.
While that upgrade is still planned as the long term solution, the councillor said the company have agreed to install a hub as an interim measure.
“Mr Michael Maron from Telstra has been in contact with me to say they are willing to provide the immediate Yetman township with a 4G Plus service,” Cr Dight said.
“It’s a really good thing for Yetman.”
She said the town was “thrilled” the company had recognised the problem “and are attempting to do something about it”.
“I will continue to agitate for the community tower to be upgraded as well, to service the wider northern part our shire,” Cr Dight said.
The Telstra hub is expected to be installed within the next month.
