Irancell, the second largest mobile network operator in Iran tests its 5G networks with the help of Ericsson. In testing, the download speed for Irancell’s 5G network peaked at 23.9 Gbps.
The first 3G network was brought by Rightel in 2012. The company was founded in 2011 and it had exclusivity on 3G network until the end of April 2013, which was extended until the end of September 2014. This exclusivity kept the country from developing 3G networks by the other mobile network operators such as MCI and Irancell for nearly 3 to 4 years. But this time no exclusivity is involved.
In May 2017, Irancell signed a contract with Ericsson to get help for developing its 5G network. This time Irancell plans to launch the 5G network simultaneously with the rest of the world. “We are aiming to keep the pace with the international operators. Iran will not be left behind again,” said Irancell’s CEO, Alireza Dezfouli during the event at Irancell HQ in Tehran. Director of Ericsson for Iran and Turkey, Ralf Pichler, was also present at the event. He mentioned that 5G technology will be available by 2020 and it would become globally accessible a year later, according to Financial Tribune.
This is actually not the first time that Irancell tested out a 5G network. Last year, for the very first time, Irancell tested its 5G network which peaked at 1.2 Gbps and this year it peaked at 23.9 Gbps which is impressive.

Talking about 5G, currently the key players in the 5G technology market include Cisco (U.S.), Ericsson (Sweden), SK Telecom (South Korea), Korea Telecom (South Korea), Nokia Networks (Finland), Samsung (South Korea), Qualcomm (U.S.), Intel (U.S.), NEC Corporation (Japan), Huawei (China), Verizon (U.S.), AT&T (U.S.), T-Mobile USA, Inc., LG (South Korea), and China Mobile (China). The 5G market will grow to $1.23 trillion by 2026, according to a new report by Ericsson. And the networking standard is poised to benefit industries including energy utilities, manufacturing, and healthcare the most.
Don’t forget about the EU
Even the EU has invested heavily in R&D to ensure that Europe takes a leading role in deploying the new generation of the mobile broadband technology. For example, 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (5G PPP) has been initiated by the EU Commission and industry manufacturers, telecommunications operators, service providers, SMEs, and researchers. In addition, several countries in APAC such as China, Japan, and South Korea have started developing projects to establish regional and national leadership positions in wireless R&D related to the 5G technology.
