Brazilian wireless giant TIM Participacoes (TIM Brasil) has reportedly activated VoLTE technology in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, following a successful testing phase. Chief technology officer Leonardo Capdeville told TeleTime that the platform utilises refarmed 1800MHz GSM spectrum in the two latest markets, rather than the 700MHz ‘digital dividend’ spectrum that has been used to support VoLTE to date.
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, TIM Brasil switched on what it claimed was ‘Latin America’s first VoLTE service’, in Brasilia, in July this year. A total of 21 markets are now said to offer VoLTE connectivity, while all 700MHz LTE markets are expected to receive VoLTE access by end-2017.
