Open Fiber to invest in Ancona FTTH rollout

The Open Fiber wholesale-only venture of Italian utility giant Enel and state lender CDP has announced an agreement with Ancona city council to build a wholesale fibre-optic network in the Marche locality in a total investment of around EUR 13 million. The aim is to roll out 21,000km of cable over 18 months to bring FTTH services at speeds of up to 1 Gbps to 21,000 homes, offices, schools and public buildings.

The deployment is part of Open Fiber’s plan to build a wholesale fibre-optic network open to all operators in 250 large Italian cities, taking advantage of parent company Enel’s installation of around 30 million smart electric meters over the next four years.

Open Fiber has already started the rollout in cities such as Perugia, Cagliari, Venice, Padua, Bari, Catania, Palermo, Parma and Genoa and recently added Treviso, Syracuse. Rozzano and the Greater Milan area to the list.
