PT Portugal (MEO) has announced that its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network now passes four million homes, equivalent to around 66% of all Portuguese residences. Alexandre Fonseca, PT’s chief technology officer, noted that the rollout has connected 1.5 million new properties since 4Q15, equivalent to around 2,800 new homes per day. New PT Portugal CEO Claudia Goya told journalists: ‘This milestone is part of our deployment plan to cover 5.3 million homes in Portugal by 2020, and reinforces the group’s strong investment in infrastructure, which will position PT as a great success story in Portugal, Europe and the world.’
The milestone was announced at a press conference in Lisbon, with the telco also unveiling its new Wi-Fi router, which it says is capable of delivering download speeds of up to 1.73Gbps, compared to the typical industry standard of around 130Mbps. The hardware was developed in-house by Altice Labs (formerly PT Inovacao) in Aveiro.
