Chile to require all phones to have emergency alert capability

Chilean telecom regulator Subtel has announced that from 23 September all mobile phones sold in the country must have the ability to receive alerts of possible earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions from the country’s early warning system. Operators will be required to include labels on the packaging of mobile devices informing consumers of compatibility with the emergency alert system, said Subtel, adding that new labelling rules replace those introduced in March. In addition to the emergency alert capability, the labels will also have to inform consumers of compatibility issues such as bands covered (2G, 3G or 4G).
