Telekom launches Gigabit speeds over FTTH network

Telekom Deutschland, the domestic fixed and mobile unit of Germany’s Deutsche Telekom (DT), has announced the launch of maximum downstream speeds of 1Gbps for customers in fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) coverage areas. The firm says it is testing and piloting the need and actual customer demand for Gigabit speeds in areas where FTTH networks are already in place. Priced at EUR119.95 (USD142.5) per month, the ‘MagentaZuhause GIGA’ plan provides down/upload connection speeds of 1Gbps/500Mbps, flat-rate calls within the German fixed line network and to all German mobile networks, and ‘EntertainTV Plus’. In addition, Telekom plans to introduce fixed broadband speeds up to 250Mbps next year following the launch of super vectoring technology.

DT invested EUR5 billion in the deployment of its network infrastructure last year, helping it to achieve LTEcoverage of 93% of Germans and increasing the length of its fibre-optic cable network to 455,000km.
