Shanghai steps in gigabit broadband era

Shanghai is racing to become the world’s first city to get full coverage of gigabit broadband services.

As Shanghai enters the gigabit broadband era, Shanghai Telecom is going to fund more than three billion RMB in the construction of gigabit broadband across the city. According to its plan, by the end of this year, over 5,000 housing estates will have had access to gigabit broadband, achieving 60 percent coverage of ultra-high speed Internet services.

In 2018, Shanghai’s gigabit broadband service will undergo a second upgrade and benefit more people. The number of gigabit broadband users is expected to exceed millions and the average bandwidth will be up to 280 megabits per second. Users will also enjoy a download speed of over 100 megabits per second. By then, Shanghai will be the first city in the globe which boasts full coverage of gigabit broadband services.

Since 2011, Shanghai Telecom has increased its broadband speed seven times, benefiting around three million users.
