Smart DSL acquired by German fiber optic operator

German fibre-optic network operator inexio has taken over broadband provider smart-DSL GmbH based in Wiggensbach, Bavaria, effective July 31, 2017.

The company has built up its own network infrastructure in several Bavarian districts including the surroundings of Munich which will now be integrated into inexio’s nationwide network. Currently, smart-DSL serves around 6,500 customers and achieves a yearly turnover of around €3 million.

“With the acquisition of smart-DSL GmbH, we consistently continue our double strategy of build & buy,” said inexio’s Managing Director Thorsten Klein. “The network perfectly complements our current rollout footprint in Bavaria and grants us a larger presence in the federal state. In the medium term, we see a potential of almost 10,000 customers on the current smart-DSL network.”

Following the takeover of p2 systems GmbH in Bavaria and Komnexx GmbH in Lower Saxony, smart-DSL is inexio’s third purchase in the past two years. The company which serves more than 75,000 customers throughout Germany wants to launch an IPTV platform in autumn 2017, thereby offering TV services in addition to internet and telephony.

The largest shareholder of inexio is Warburg Pincus, a private equity investor where René Obermann, the former CEO of Deutsche Telekom, is a managing director and partner.
