Dialog Axiata trials 5G mobile technology

Sri Lanka’s Dialog Axiata has said that it has carried out a ‘5G’ network capability trial with technology partners Ericsson and Huawei in Colombo. In a statement, the operator said: ‘The demonstration established the capabilities of 5G technology to deliver throughputs in excess of 35Gbps on the 5G Radio [Air] Interface, setting a solid foundation for the future evolution of the nation’s broadband connectivity to a technology generation well ahead of South Asia.’

Dialog is working toward the implementation of 5G technology in Sri Lanka, and the latest trial marks another milestone in its quest to deliver Gigabit speeds with near zero latency. The demonstration included a range of 5G solutions including Massive MIMO, cloud radio and IoT-based smart parking, real time 4K video streaming, industry automation and augmented reality using robots and demonstrations on digital business solutions. The company notes that 5G connectivity offers ultra-low latency, which will enable major breakthroughs in areas such as robotics, remote surgery, autonomous transport and next generation entertainment.

year Dialog – Sri Lanka’s largest telecom services provider by subscribers – carried out South Asia’s first successful trial of new generation Massive MIMO offering improved spectrum efficiency and a theoretical six-fold boost in capacity from the same spectrum resource. The cellco has also recently concluded a trial MIMO deployment that delivered speeds up to 716Mbps over a single 20MHz LTETDD carrier.
