Telstra activates Cat M1 network for IoT services

Australian operator Telstra has activated an Internet of Things network through Cat M1 technology. Cat M1 operates over Telstra’s 4G network and is designed to enable IoT devices to have expanded reach in distance and depth into buildings.

The operator also says it will soon deploy range extension capability, and provide customers with a Cat M1-enabled device with a network footprint that is around three million square kilometres in area. This will enable connectivity to such things as sensors in basements or communications panels in lifts. Cat M1 can also enable VoLTE calling on small portable devices with long battery life.

According to Mike Wright, Telstra’s managing director for networks, the operator has also started testing software that supports the Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) standard.
