Fastweb upgrades project to bring 1Gbps FTTH to Bologna

Italian operator Fastweb has announced an agreement with Bologna city council to extend its 1Gbps fibre-optic broadband service to the centre and metropolitan areas of the northern Italian city as well as its historic Montagnola park. The company will use Parco Montagnola’s public lighting infrastructure to install access points and provide high-speed Wi-Fi coverage throughout the park. Fastweb’s ‘UltraFibra’ FTTH service currently allows over 85,000 homes and businesses in Bologna, some 37 percent of the city’s total, to access the internet at speeds of up to 1Gbps download and 200Mbps upload.

The company added that over the next 12 months its 1Gbps FTTH network will be expanded to 80 percent of the city’s households and offices via the Flash Fiber joint venture launched with Telecom Italia, while its 100Mbps FTTC network already covers around half of Bologna. Fastweb last year announced that it would bring fibre-optic broadband services to 13 million households and businesses in 500 cities by 2020 in a total investment of EUR 500 million, including 8 million via FTTC technology and 5 million via FTTH.
