Women ICT Frontier Initiative (WIFI) introduced in Bangladesh

To bring more women under the umbrella of Digital Bangladesh Women ICT Frontier Initiative (WIFI) was launched last week in Dhaka. Speaker of the parliament Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury inaugurated the Bangladesh Women ICT Frontier Initiative (WIFI) at Hotel Pan Pacific Sonargoan. ICT Division is planning to provide training to upscale the entrepreneurship skills to 30,000 women to attain the SDG's goal number 5 through this initiative. UNAPCICT will support with the strategy while government will provide financial support to train them. Bangladesh is the fourth country to implement WIFI. Prior to Bangladesh Cambodia, Kazakhstan and Sri Lanka has implemented the WIFI program. During her speech as the commencement speaker, Dr. Shirin Sharmin said, 'We all know about the benefits of connecting women with ICT. It is also mentioned in the SDGs. And we believe, technology driven goals have to include the half of the population.'State Minister of Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki, State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed, Director UNAPCICT Dr. Hyeun-Suk Rhee, USA ambassador to Bangladeh Marcia Bernicat, Australian high commissioner to Bangladesh, Julia Niblett, ICT Secretary (acting) Subir Kishore Choudhury, DoICT(Department of ICT) Director General Banamali Bhowmick, Additional secretary of ICT Division Susanta Kumar Saha also addressed the invitees in the event.
