French telecoms provider Iliad Group has launched commercial services in the French overseas territory (departement d’outre-mer, DOM) of Reunion under its ‘Free’ brand, maintaining its reputation as a disruptive player with an aggressively-priced tariff plan and the activation of its LTE network. The new 4G network covers 98% of the population, and offers theoretical peak download speeds of up to 150Mbps. Stirring up the Reunion market, Free’s introductory plan is priced at half the cost of the equivalent package available in metropolitan France. The service costs EUR9.99 per month and includes unlimited calls to DOM regions, the French metropole and 24 other European countries, unlimited SMS to DOM regions and the French mainland, unlimited MMS to Reunion and 25GB of 4G downloads (data usage above that limit is available at a reduced download speed): the equivalent plan in mainland France, meanwhile, is priced at EUR19.99 per month. The Free-branded service is offered via Telco OI, which is 50/50 owned by Iliad Group and Axian Group (previously Hiridjee Group) and previously offered mobile services under the ‘Only’ moniker.
