AT&T and Ericsson have held what they say are the first live LTE-LAA field trials, reaching initial speeds of more than 650 Mbps in downtown San Francisco. LTE-LAA technology is expected to play a key role as network speeds move up to 1 Gbps at some small cell sites, with initial rollout planned by the end of the year.
The technology will also be used to upgrade the network and boost speeds in AT&T’s 5G Evolution markets. The carrier wants to deliver 5G speeds from late 2018.
LTE-LAA combines unlicensed spectrum with licensed spectrum through carrier aggregation to increase network capacity. It is designed to exist in harmony with other unlicensed spectrum technologies such as Wi-Fi.
