Most public transport vehicles in Nepal will be able to provide free Wi-Fi service soon to their passengers with the state-owned Nepal Telecom (NT) offering the internet access.
The telecom giant said in a statement on Monday that it has designed the package in a way that passengers should not pay any fee for using the Wi-Fi although vehicle operators will have to pay a marginal fee to get internet service.
There are nearly 70,000 buses, mini buses and micro-buses registered at the Nepal government's transport offices. Currently, a very few number of vehicle operators are providing Wi-Fi service.
"We launched the service starting from Monday with the aim of enabling all the passengers to enjoy internet service free of cost," Sovan Adhikari, joint spokesperson of the NT, told Xinhua.
According to the NT, the service will be available in public vehicles used in both short and long routes. The passengers can have Wi-Fi access through their electronic equipment such as smart phones, laptops and tablets.
Adhikari said the Wi-Fi sevice to be made available in the public vehicles will cover 70 percent of the country's territory. The NT has forged partnership with a Nepali private company - Cybernetics Private Limited - to deliver this service.
