HBO readies major LATAM OTT launch

The subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service has already available in Colombia, Mexico, Argentina and Brazil since 2016, but has remained bundled to a pay-TV subscription in the rest of Latin America. However, at the end of last year HBO launched a major update of the service across the region, prior to the release of the standalone platform.

Now, the anticipated launch has begun in the Caribbean, with more countries gradually getting access within the next months. The streaming service can be independently subscribed to through any of HBO’s digital properties, both desktop and mobile.

According to the company, the launch follows the rapid growth of SVOD penetration across the region during 2016.

“Consumers are watching more and more content through the Internet and integrating new technologies into their consumption habits. The audience is not only watching content at home, it wants to take it everywhere,” said Francisco Smith, EVP, distribution and media development, HBO Latin America.

Across the Caribbean, the service will be available for a similar price to the HBO/MAX pay-TV subscription, which varies from country to country.

“Our main goal is to deliver alternatives to subscribers across the region,” added Smith. “We’ll also keep exploring new opportunities with our pay-TV affiliates and other platforms to expand the reach of HBO content.”
