Safaricom boosts 4G+ and fiber access networks

Kenya’s leading cellco by subscribers Safaricom has issued an update on its expansion of ‘4G+’ LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) mobile broadband network services, announcing on its website that the technology is enabling faster mobile data speeds and greater capacity in major towns/cities via carrier aggregation (CA). Safaricom has so far activated around 100 4G+ cell sites in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, as well as parts of Kisii, Naivasha, Kitui, Machakos, Kakamega and Kericho, with more LTE-A base stations in other locations scheduled to be switched on ‘in coming months’, and claims peak download speeds of up to 150Mbps. The operator added that its nationwide 2G/3G/4G network currently has 4,677 2G sites, 3,517 3G sites and 1,103 4G LTE sites, whilst its high speed fibre broadband access network now passes over 50,000 homes and 1,500 commercial buildings.
