Ofcom extends consultation on Sky/Fox deal

British telecoms regulator Ofcom has confirmed that, in light of the recently announced plans for a general election to be held in June, the Secretary of State, Karen Bradley, has extended the deadline for submissions regarding the proposed takeover deal between pay-TV giant Sky and 21st Century Fox until 20 June; the original deadline had been set as 16 May 2017.

In a press release confirming the development, Ofcom reiterated that the issues it is required to consider in the public interest assessment may overlap with its own consideration of Sky’s fitness to hold broadcasting licences. Given this overlap, it has said it will extend the consideration of it ‘fit and proper assessment’, with a conclusion expected to be reached on 20 June.

Earlier this month it was confirmed that the European Commission (EC) had unconditionally approved the Sky/Fox deal under the EU Merger Regulation, saying it had concluded the transaction ‘would raise no competition concerns in Europe’.
