Careem to introduce Digital Barriers’ facial recognition technology

Digital Barriers has secured a recurring revenue software contract for its facial recognition technology with Careem, a ride-sharing provider operating in more than fifty cities in the Middle East and North Africa.

Careem will integrate the facial recognition software into its driver smartphone application ensuring that the actual driver of the vehicle can be matched in the background in real-time to the authorized and accredited driver. Careem will also use the Digital Barriers’ facial recognition platform to secure the driver enrollment process.

“In our efforts to simplify people’s lives in the region, safety plays an unprecedented role and the integration of Digital Barriers’ facial technology will further bolster the confidence and faith our users have in the Careem brand,” explained Magnus Olsson, co-founder and chief experience officer at Careem. “The biometric technology helps us strengthen our relationship with our users further by providing them with the reassurance that every Captain’s credentials are being monitored at all times through a sophisticated network.”

“This represents the first integration of our facial recognition software into a mainstream commercial application, on a recurring revenue basis, and has demonstrated that (our) solution delivers a better level of performance than other providers of facial recognition solutions, whilst maintaining a competitive price point,” commented Zak Doffman, CEO of Digital Barriers.

Just last month, Uber India announced it will also introduce a facial recognition-based ID check feature for its India app in Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kolkata, with more cities to follow.
