SK Telecom, Verizon plan new ICT ecosystem

SK Telecom Co. said Monday that its company head met his counterpart from U.S.-based Verizon Communications, with the two sides sharing ideas on expanding cooperation on the fifth-generation network, as well as establishing a new ICT ecosystem around the globe.

Park Jung-ho, the head of South Korea's No. 1 mobile carrier, met Lowell McAdam of Verizon, and discussed ways to expand ties on the 5G network, as well as the Internet of Things technologies.

The 5G technology aims to offer data transmission speeds about 100 times faster than the current fourth-generation networks. IoT is a concept in which all tangible objects are connected to the Internet and can identify themselves to other devices in order to exchange necessary data for improved efficiency and convenience.

Both areas are considered to be new growth engines for global technology and network companies.

Park plans to meet Tim Hoettges, the CEO of Germany-based Deutsche Telekom, on April 11, to also discuss the 5G network and artificial intelligence.

SK Telecom said its meeting with No. 1 players from the United States and Europe will speed up the commercialization of the 5G network-related services.

"Together with leading global mobile carriers, we plan to speed up the technology standardization of the 5G technology and develop various services based on the network," Park said. He stressed SK will strive to expand the global ICT ecosystem.
