Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury urges safe Internet for Bangladesh

Jatiyo Sangshad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury emphasised safe internet as online threats continue to rise.

“Bangladesh is moving forward in every aspect. A rural old woman can now speak with her expatriate son abroad from digital union centres set up across the country,” she said.

Speaker added: “The government has established 4,500 digital union centres in the country. Digital Bangladesh is today a reality.”

Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was speaking as chief guest at the inauguration of a two-day workshop at Le Meridian hotel in Dhaka on Tuesday.

The two-day event was organised by the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation in collaboration with Posts and Telecommunication Division and Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission.

“Every year around $4bn are being stolen online by hackers. It’s a big internet security threat not only in Bangladesh but across the globe,” Jatiya Sangsad Speaker said.

The workshop was attended by representatives from Interpol, Intonational Telecommunication Unit, Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Police, Rapid Action Battalion and Bangladesh Border Guard.

State Minister for Posts and Telecommunication Tarana Halim said the government will take “effective measures” against the online sites or Facebook pages spreading threats of militancy.

CTO Secretary-General Shola Taylor presented the keynote paper on “Tackling Cybercrimes: A global imperative for a safe internet.”
