Momentum towards FTTH deployments grows in Europe

According to the FTTH Council Europe, there were more than 20.5 million FTTH/B subscribers across the EU by the end of September 2016, while the penetration rate came to 9.4 per cent.

However, some countries are seeing much stronger growth than others, with France and Spain driving much of this expansion.

By contrast, the UK does not actually appear in the data, as it only measures countries with a certain minimum penetration rate.

Ronan Kelly, President of the FTTH Council Europe, commented: "Looking at countries such as France and Spain, and the overall FTTH growth rate in Europe, it is now clear that there is a stronger than ever momentum towards FTTH.

"We are glad to witness such progress. We feel that Europe is now well positioned to stimulate even more FTTH rollout."

Mr Kelly added that while there is still a great deal of work to do, Europe is moving in the right direction and on the way to becoming a global digital leader.
