Spark rolls out New Zealand’s first 200Gbps optical transport solution

Spark has rolled out New Zealand’s first 200Gbps per wavelength production fibre link using Finnish equipment vendor Nokia’s Photonic Service Switch 1830 (PSS1830) Optical Transport Network (OTN). This means that Spark’s capacity will effectively be doubled, whilst also reducing cost per bit on the telco’s fibre network. Nokia’s 200Gbps channel is also able to co-exist with Spark’s current 10Gbps and 100Gbps channels, protecting the original network.

Colin Brown, General Manager of Networks at Spark said: ‘Nokia has helped Spark NZ reach a new milestone with our world-class Optical Transport Network, achieving our vision of a data-driven future for New Zealand and underpinning an integrated network including fibre, 3G, 4G, 4.5G, wireless broadband and Wi-Fi.’
