Virtual Reality is taking over the world. Initially, we might have dismissed is at as a fad. But as 2016 comes to a close, Virtual Reality is taking over the world. For proof of this, one only needs to look at the proliferation of VR headsets and the increase in 360-degree videos. To find some prominent examples one only needs to look at Google, which added VR support to Android 7.0 Nougat, launched a VR headset and released a YouTube VR app. Now, Dialog announced that it too is building a virtual reality platform.
This isn’t Sri Lanka’s first foray into Virtual reality. We’ve already seen the likes of local startups such as LiveRoom and Arimac building virtual reality applications. But this is one of the first attempts we are seeing from a local corporate venturing into the realm of virtual reality. So what kind of content can we expect from Dialog’s VR platform?

According to the company, this VR platform will feature virtual tours of historical locations, edutainment, and local entertainment. To do so, the platform will be using 360-degree pictures videos and games. It will also you to create and upload your own VR content onto the platform. In other words, the platform will support crowdsourcing of virtual reality content.
This crowdsourced content can also be shared with other services providers. This can be done using the Mobile Internet Fulfilment Exchange (MIFE) API built by Axiata Digital Solutions. To experience everything on Dialog’s VR platform, all you need is a Virtual Reality headset. However, at this time we don’t know what headsets Dialog will be supporting.
However, it’s unlikely to cost you an arm and a leg. From what we know, Dialog wants to give a cost-effective solution for Sri Lankans to experience VR. Furthermore, it’s likely that the company will support their own brand of headsets, which doesn’t to demand a high-end PC like those of the Oculus Rift. Additionally, the platform will be made available as an app on both iOS and Android. This means you can opt for a cheap Google Cardboard headset.
