Orange to run IoT-based lost and found service for missing pets

Orange’s network is to track lost pets after it signed a deal with Austria-based company Tractive.

The France-based operator’s enterprise arm will provide IoT connectivity through a dedicated SIM card that will be added to the company’s GPS product.

This enables pet owners to view the location of their pets in real-time, create alarms for when animals leave a specific area and view historical movements via a PC, Apple TV or mobile devices.

Alongside GPS tracking, Tractive offers pet owners a training app and an activity tracker.

Orange Business Services claimed there was “a big demand for these type of services” given that 10 million pets go missing around the world each year.

Tractive CEO Michael Hurnaus said: “For the services we provide to loving pet owners, seamless and interruption-resistant connectivity on a global scale is absolutely key.”

The connectivity that OBS is providing is part of its Datavenue solution, which offers businesses a range of IoT-related services.

The company announced this week that Datavenue is now available globally, having been launched in France last year.

According to a Machina Research report in August, revenues from the IoT are set to top $3 trillion in 2025, up from $750 billion last year.

Orange is aiming to generate €600 million in revenues from connected objects by 2018.

It did not reveal its current IoT sales when it released its Q3 financials today.

OBS saw sales rise 0.7 percent to €1.6 billion in the three months to September.
